Actually, the Pella Opera House is one of the few reception halls in town that has a liquor license, and a cash bar is available at intermission of most performances. When is your next opera? Although the name of our venue is the Pella Opera House,
this is not the genre of entertainment most often performed. Opera House was a common name given to
entertainment venues in the late 1800s and early 1900s because of the social
attitude toward “theatre establishments.” Opera Houses commonly have the stage
on the second-story of the building, as the Pella Opera House does. For other interesting facts check out the
book, The Opera Houses of Iowa, by
George D. Glenn and Richard L Poole. Who owns the Pella Opera House? The facility is owned and managed by the Pella Opera House
Commission, a private, not-for-profit corporation with a board composed of local citizens. When was the Pella Opera House built? The original building was built in 1900 as the community’s social and cultural center and remained so until the “talkies” (movies). In 1986 a group of citizens concerned with the arts programs in Pella set out to renovate the venue, and the doors were reopened in 1990 under the name, The Pella Opera House.
