"Bringing the world’s finest performing artists The Pella Opera House is a non-profit corporation, was founded by a group of community leaders committed to bringing the finest performing artists to perform for the people of Pella. Today, our purpose includes the presentation of internationally acclaimed artists from the entire spectrum of the performing arts to Pella for public performances and educational activities that entertain, uplift, educate and inspire audiences, students and artists. We believe the arts benefit everyone. Therefore we strive to provide the exposure to a broad spectrum of the population and also to those who otherwise could not afford to attend arts events. Since 1989 the Pella Opera House (POH) has presented over 250 performances of the world’s finest music, dance and theatre. Our small staff handles everything from selecting artists and presenting productions to marketing events and raising additional funds necessary to cover all the costs. Our volunteers provide assistance to the staff, which makes the season a success. The Pella Opera House is the largest institution for the arts in Marion County and provides a key anchor in the touring schedules of artists for the Midwest audiences. They come from Greater Des Moines, Omaha, and Dubuque. Over 150,000 people of every age, income and cultural background come to Pella each spring to visit our famous Tulip Time Festival. Since its inception, the POH has included educational programs on the regular season schedule. Master classes, lectures, demonstrations and workshops held in local elementary schools, high schools, community centers and partnerships with other sponsors and organizations. The organization’s fiscal budget is reflected by the fact that we have an endowment of over $1.4 million and through the Board of Directors, staff, and the community support we do not carry any deficit. The balance comes from community-spirited businesses and individuals, with less than 3 percent government grants. Contributions to the Pella Opera House keep ticket prices affordable and supports the artists fees, shipping, transportation costs, and educational programs. |
